Step Afrika! introduces audiences to the importance of stepping in cultural identity and the use of body percussion as a means of communication.

The company blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, traditional West and Southern African dances, and an array of contemporary dance and art forms. Featuring the powerful dance of the Zulu nation and the poly-rhythmic South African gumboot dance, their performances integrate songs, storytelling, humor, and audience participation into a cohesive, compelling artistic experience that showcases their technique, agility, and pure energy. The first professional dance company dedicated to the tradition of stepping, Step Afrika! is featured in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture with the world’s first interactive stepping exhibit.
