Did you know you can experience a taste of Broadway here in the Ann Arbor area?

Just a short drive from downtown Ann Arbor is the quaint city of Dexter, home to The Encore Musical Theatre Company. Known for attracting top talent nationwide, The Encore is a must-visit venue in Michigan for those who love the arts.

To bring you insider access, we went behind the scenes with Jessica Grové, Broadway veteran and Director of Marketing for The Encore, and asked what it takes to create these spectacular and moving productions.

Here's what Jessica had to say.

1. The Encore has welcomed Broadway stars and impressive local actors to the stage. What do artists connect with most here?

Performers often talk about the intimacy of The Encore. Our space allows artists to connect with audiences in a way that feels immediate and personal. Broadway veterans and local professionals alike appreciate the collaborative atmosphere, production quality, and our audiences' passion. There’s also a strong sense of community here, and artists genuinely enjoy returning because they feel supported, challenged, and celebrated.

2. Tribute concerts honoring musicians like Billie Holiday and Michael Jackson have become popular at The Encore. What makes these concerts special?

We choose our tribute concerts based on artists and music that deeply connect with our audiences across generations. We look for iconic catalogs, great storytelling, and performers who can authentically capture the music's spirit while still bringing their own artistry to it. These concerts are special because of the energy in the room. The tributes feel part concert, part shared memory. Our audiences are singing along and reliving moments tied to the music.

3. Behind the scenes, what does it take to bring a production at The Encore to life?

This takes months of collaboration and planning. Scenic, lighting, costume, sound, and props designers all begin work well before rehearsals start. Actors and musicians then spend weeks rehearsing music, choreography, and staging, often six days a week! Sets are built, costumes are fitted, and countless technical details come together behind the scenes. By opening night, hundreds of hours of work from artists, technicians, and staff have shaped what audiences see on stage.

4. Sensory friendly performances are a part of your programming. What can someone expect when attending one of these shows?

Sensory friendly performances are designed to create a more welcoming and comfortable experience for individuals with sensory sensitivities and their families. We adjust lighting and sound levels, provide a relaxed environment where movement and vocalization are accepted, and we provide designated quiet spaces if a break is needed. Our goal is to make live theatre more accessible while still preserving the joy of the experience.

5. What is one insider tip or fun fact about The Encore that even regulars might not know?

Many people don’t realize that The Encore operates out of a beautifully repurposed historic school building in Dexter. What was once classrooms and hallways is now home to professional theatre, concerts, rehearsals, and community events.

Fun fact: Because of the intimacy of the space, there truly isn’t a “bad seat” in the house! Audiences are always up close to the action on stage.

We'd like to thank The Encore and Jessica for sharing with us!
