Brief Canna History

Ann Arbor’s cannabis history dates to the 1960s. U-M student newspaper, the Michigan Daily, called for the plant’s legalization in ’67, but it was the arrest and 10-year sentence of activist and poet John Sinclair for possessing two joints that put Ann Arbor on the map calling for cannabis legalization.

Years later, a “Free John Sinclair” rally was held at U-M Crisler Arena. Special guests like John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Stevie Wonder, and Bob Segar performed in solidarity. The Black Panthers provided security, and thousands of people freely smoked weed in the packed arena.  Three days later, John Sinclair was freed and the Michigan Supreme Court ruled the state’s marijuana statutes were unconstitutional.

The rally turned into Hash Bash, with the first event held on April 1, 1972. This annual protest-focused gathering happens every first Saturday of April at the University of Michigan Diag where activists and political figures take the mic. Nearby, the Monroe Street Fair fills with vendors, live music, and community.
