If you’re new to exploring the University of Michigan campus, there are a few popular traditions and legends you’ll want to know about.

We're sharing tips on finding good luck, singing with 100,000+ fans, and steering clear of what not to do.

Here are five student traditions to know about near U-M campus.

1. Avoid Crossing the Block "M"

Perhaps the most famous U-M lore: If you step on or cross over the bronze block "M" in the center of campus, you will fail your first exam or reduce your GPA. Pro tip: It's a best practice in general to just go around it.

3. Paint the Giant Rock

Layers of paint build up on the colorful landmark, with messages that are constantly changing. It’s been painted nearly every week for decades.

4. Sing 'Mr. Brightside' at a Football Game

Attend at least one U-M football game at Michigan Stadium and get ready to sing along to "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers during the third quarter. The song has become a tradition at Michigan home games for nearly ten years. You'll remember this moment while rooting for the Wolverines.

5. Spin the Cube for Good Luck

There’s a 15-foot cube on campus that’s said to bring extra luck to those who visit. With a gentle push, the “Endover” sculpture spins on its axis. Tradition says that spinning the cube brings good luck!
