Traveling solo in Ann Arbor means the adventure is completely yours, and knowing where to start makes all the difference.
That's why we created our Solo Travel Series, inviting locals to share their favorite places and insider tips to help you experience Ann Arbor like a pro.
The Social Traveler
We partnered with Jennifer Santi, passionate local and Marketing and Communications Manager for Zingerman’s Delicatessen, to share ways to find community through signature deli events and classes.
In Jennifer's Words:
Come Solo, Leave Full: Great Food and Good Company at Zingerman's Deli Tasting Events
Zingerman's Deli is honored and delighted to welcome over a half a million visitors and locals into our business each year. Most arrive ready to enjoy our legendary sandwiches and to peruse the cheese and deli meat case and shelves of food from around the world. Whether you are one person or a group of ten or more, our staff will charm you with their enthusiasm for our traditionally made and full-flavored food. We have a special invitation to those looking to dive a bit deeper into the flavor profile, history and uniqueness of our food–join us at one of our tasting events!
Zingerman’s Deli events are perfect for solo travelers seeking social interaction and connection. One of our taglines is “you really can taste the difference,” and at our events, you’ll not only experience the taste but learn why. Discover the stories behind our producers, how the food is made, and how to taste like an expert, all while learning more about your own preferences. It’s absolutely okay not to like something, but understanding why is part of the fun.
Our staff excels at making everyone feel comfortable. Community around the table is central to what we do. From experience, tasting with others is the best way to develop the language and confidence to describe what you experience. Many of our regular attendees join events solo, but you’ll never feel left out. Everyone is there to learn and celebrate food together.
Our event calendar varies seasonally, so there’s always something new to discover. We have classes about cheese, olive oil, chocolate, tinned fish and tea. We have classes that teach you how to pair beer (or wine or hard cider) with cheese and figure out what pairings you enjoy most. And we also frequently teach a hands-on mozzarella-making class, and because these classes are limited to only 6 people and you’ll be pulling cheese curd, the conversation is bound to be cozy and lively!
Each of our evening events includes VIP after-hours shopping and a 20% off coupon. We think there’s no better way to flex some of your social muscles than talking with our staff one-on-one to find even more delicious foods to take home as memories of your time in Ann Arbor.
